WHAT I SAW AND WHAT I THOUGHT

Despite fearing the wellbeing of her knees, Sissj Bassani has me immediately fixated on her collapsing corpse as it meanders through the crowd. She is the anti-bambi, and has no desire to find secure footing.

Set to an angsty soundtrack of hard metal playing at an imperceptible volume, β€˜a vasistas’ is a solo that births a void to be filled with meaning and emotion through the repetition of the single act of falling over.

I will always be the first to herald an almost stubborn commitment to one idea, and Bassani exemplifies how simplicity in movement content can still rouse an array of reactions; laughter, gasps, awkward squirms.

The music has stopped and Bassani has left the stage. But the traces of her performance still buzz through the space- a handful of people can’t help but get halfway to standing then surrender to crumbling legs. Long live the anti-bambi.
