DRIFT MATTER: WALKING AS ATTENDING TO AN ANARCHIVE OF PLACE
2024 - 2025
UNIVERSITY OF AMSTERDAM,
BUURTWERKPLAATS NOORDERHOF
_______________
Conducted within the container of the Research Masters in Artistic Research at the University of Amsterdam, this ongoing project is occupied with how walking as artistic research practice can be used as an embodied methodology when attending to an anarchive of place.
For this iteration of my research, I have been working within the Slotermeer neighbourhood of Amsterdam, one of Amsterdam’s oldest ‘Garden Cities’ whose development began in the post-war climate of the 1950s. Slotermeer is a neighbourhood laden with evidence of experimental and meticulous urban planning, diversely populated and with relatively recent history that often overlooks the legacy of farms and marshlands that lay here before. It is also home to Buurtwerkplaats Noorderhof - the neighbourhood workplace in which I host workshops, and volunteer as part of their Klusteam. Owing to its layered properties, and my growing familiarity with its locality, Slotermeer has emerged as an ideal site for my walking research.
The aim of this project is to develop different walking methodologies that work towards stimulating a reimagined perspective of Slotermeer, reshuffling and resurfacing its layers. Looking ahead, I hope to develop a toolkit that will enhance my own artistic research trajectory wherever it might take me. I am working towards opportunities that allow me to apply this research to different places.
